Vaillant F61 fault code: what it means and what to do
An F61 on your Vaillant boiler points to a gas valve actuation fault — the control board cannot drive the gas valve correctly, so the boiler locks out for safety. Here is what it means, what causes it, and why this one is strictly a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Quick answer
F61 on a Vaillant means a gas valve actuation fault: the printed circuit board (PCB) cannot drive or confirm the gas valve correctly, usually because of a faulty gas valve, damaged wiring between the PCB and valve, or a fault on the PCB itself. The boiler locks out as a safety measure.
The only safe homeowner step is one reset. If F61 returns, stop and book a Gas Safe registered engineer — the gas valve, wiring and PCB are sealed gas and electrical parts that must not be opened or repaired by anyone unregistered. If you ever smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.
What does F61 mean on a Vaillant boiler?
F61 (sometimes shown as F.61) is a gas valve actuation fault. In plain terms, your boiler's control board — the PCB — is trying to open and control the gas valve, but it cannot drive the valve correctly or cannot confirm that the valve is behaving as commanded.
Because this directly affects the safe flow of gas to the burner, the boiler shuts down and locks out rather than risk an unsafe condition.
The code appears across the Vaillant ecoTEC range (including ecoTEC plus and ecoTEC pro) and other current Vaillant combi and system models. The underlying meaning is the same throughout, though the exact part numbers and resistances an engineer checks vary by model.
F61 is closely related to the gas valve itself, the wiring loom that connects it to the PCB, and the gas valve control circuit on the board.
This is an engineer-only fault. The gas valve, its wiring and the PCB are sealed gas and electrical components. It is illegal and dangerous for anyone who is not Gas Safe registered to open the boiler or touch these parts. If you ever smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.
Common causes of F61
An engineer will be looking at a short list of likely culprits:
- Faulty gas valve — the valve's internal solenoid coils can fail, or the valve can stick mechanically so the PCB cannot actuate it correctly.
- Damaged or loose wiring — a worn, corroded or burnt connection in the wiring harness between the PCB and the gas valve can break the control signal.
- PCB fault — the gas valve control circuit on the board can fail, meaning the PCB cannot send or read the signal properly.
- Moisture ingress — water or condensation reaching the PCB or the gas valve connectors can cause a short circuit that shows as F61.
- Gas supply problems — less common, but a supply issue to the boiler can sometimes contribute. This still needs a Gas Safe engineer to confirm.
What you can safely check
F61 is not a code with a DIY fix. There is no homeowner-safe repair — every likely cause sits behind the boiler casing on the gas or electrical side. The only things you should do yourself are a couple of external checks and a single reset to rule out a one-off glitch:
- Check the boiler still has power and that any external gas supply valve is on (do not adjust anything inside the boiler).
- Check whether your other gas appliances are working normally, which can hint at a wider supply issue — but do not touch the boiler's internals.
- Perform one reset, following your manual or our guide on how to reset your boiler.
- If F61 clears and does not return, the lockout may have been a transient fault. Keep an eye on it.
- If F61 comes straight back — or returns within hours or days — stop and book a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not keep resetting it repeatedly, as that defeats a safety lockout.
That is the boundary. Unlike a low-pressure code, there is nothing on the gas valve, wiring or PCB that you can or should adjust. For context on what other lockouts mean, see our guide to boiler lockout.
When to call a Gas Safe registered engineer
Call an engineer as soon as F61 persists after one reset. Only a Gas Safe Register engineer may legally work on the gas valve, burner, flue, sealed combustion circuit, PCB or any gas-carrying part. A competent engineer will typically:
- Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the PCB and gas valve for continuity, corrosion or heat damage.
- Measure the gas valve's coil resistance and the response voltage coming from the PCB to work out whether the valve, the wiring or the board is at fault.
- Replace the gas valve, repair the wiring, or replace the PCB depending on the diagnosis.
- Carry out gas safety and combustion checks before returning the boiler to service.
For more on the part itself, our guide on a faulty gas valve explains the symptoms and replacement process in more detail.
Typical Vaillant F61 repair cost
Costs depend entirely on which component is at fault. The figures below are indicative 2026 UK ranges including parts and labour; your engineer should quote after diagnosis. Many independent engineers deduct the call-out fee from the final repair price if you proceed.
| Job | Indicative 2026 cost |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic / call-out | £60–£100 |
| Wiring or connector repair | £100–£250 |
| Gas valve replacement (part + fit) | £200–£350 |
| PCB replacement (part + fit) | £300–£500+ |
| Vaillant fixed-price repair (one-off, inc. VAT) | around £399 |
If your boiler is older and needs both a gas valve and a PCB, it is worth weighing the repair cost against replacement. For a wider view, see our guide to boiler repair costs.

Will boiler cover pay for an F61 repair?
A gas valve, wiring or PCB fault on an otherwise working boiler is the kind of breakdown many boiler cover policies are designed to handle, so an F61 may be covered — but whether yours actually is depends entirely on your policy terms. Common exclusions and limits apply: pre-existing faults, boilers beyond a certain age, parts caps, and an excess can all affect what you pay.
Read your own policy schedule before assuming the whole bill is covered, and check with your provider if you are unsure.
If you do not yet have cover, it can help to understand what boiler cover includes and to weigh up whether boiler cover is worth it for a boiler of your age.
A single PCB or gas valve repair can cost more than a year of cover, which is part of the appeal — but cover is not free money, so it is for you to compare the annual premium against the repair risk for your own boiler.

Is a Vaillant F61 fault dangerous?
The fault itself triggers a safety lockout, so the boiler stops rather than running unsafely — that is the system protecting you. The danger lies in attempting a repair without being Gas Safe registered, as F61 involves the gas valve and gas-carrying parts. Leave the repair to an engineer, and if you ever smell gas, call 0800 111 999.
Can I fix F61 myself?
No. There is no homeowner-safe fix for F61. The only step you should take is a single reset to rule out a one-off glitch. The gas valve, wiring loom and PCB are all sealed gas or electrical parts that, by law, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on.
Will F61 clear on a reset?
It might clear if the lockout was a transient fault, and a single reset is worth trying. But if F61 returns straight away or comes back within hours or days, the underlying gas valve, wiring or PCB problem is still there. Stop resetting and book an engineer.
How much does it cost to repair F61?
It depends on the cause. A wiring repair may be £100–£250, a gas valve replacement around £200–£350, and a PCB replacement £300–£500 or more, plus a £60–£100 diagnostic that is often deducted from the final bill. Vaillant also offers a one-off fixed-price repair at around £399 inc. VAT.
Should I keep using the boiler with F61 showing?
You generally cannot — the boiler locks out and will not fire while F61 is active, which is the safety system doing its job. Do not try to force it back into operation by repeated resetting. Arrange a Gas Safe engineer to diagnose and repair it properly.
