Churchill Boiler Cover Review

Churchill is a well-known UK home and motor insurer (the one with the nodding bulldog). It does not sell a standalone boiler-cover plan; instead it offers boiler and heating breakdown protection as part of its FCA-regulated Home Emergency cover, which is bundled as standard with its top-tier Home Plus policy or added as an optional extra to a standard home insurance policy.

Overview

Churchill is a long-established British insurance brand, best known for home and car insurance. Following Aviva's completion of its acquisition of Direct Line Group on 1 July 2025, Churchill is now part of Aviva (the Churchill brand has been retained). If you want your boiler and central heating covered through Churchill, you do it via its Home Emergency cover rather than a dedicated boiler-cover product. This is an add-on (or standard inclusion on the Home Plus tier) sitting on top of a buildings/contents home insurance policy, not a separate maintenance contract.

Because it is an insurance product, it is FCA-regulated and carries FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection. The cover handles the primary heating system (gas or oil-fired central heating boilers being the typical case), plus plumbing, drainage, electrics, pests and lockouts. Importantly, it is breakdown/emergency insurance, so it does NOT include an annual boiler service or routine maintenance the way a British Gas-style HomeCare plan does.

What customers say

Sentiment is broadly positive for the buying and renewal experience and front-line service, with a strong overall Trustpilot score, but more mixed at claim stage - the most common complaints centre on steep renewal price rises and slow or frustrating claims communication.

  • Helpful and polite phone staff when discussing policy details or claims
  • Competitive pricing for new customers in many cases

Common complaints

  • Sharp renewal premium increases for existing customers, even with no claims made
  • Poor communication and chasing required after a claim is submitted (e.g. leaks)
  • Some customers feel reasons are found to decline or limit claims
  • Use of third-party outsourcing and limited/charged contact channels at times

Pros & watch-outs

Pros

  • FCA-regulated insurance, so it carries FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection (unlike unregulated boiler service plans)
  • Backed by a large, established insurer (U K Insurance Limited), now part of Aviva following the Direct Line Group acquisition - rather than a small operator
  • 24/7 emergency helpline that arranges an authorised repairer for boiler/heating breakdowns
  • Broad emergency scope beyond the boiler - plumbing, drainage, electrics, pests and lockouts in one add-on
  • Convenient if you already hold or want Churchill home insurance - it bolts onto one policy
  • Strong Trustpilot standing (around 4.4/5 across roughly 28,000 reviews) for the Churchill brand

Watch-outs

  • It is emergency/breakdown insurance, NOT a maintenance plan - there is no annual boiler service included
  • £500 per call-out cap on repairs, labour and parts; larger jobs could exceed this
  • Generally only available as an add-on to (or bundled within) a Churchill home insurance policy - not sold standalone
  • No cover for losses in the first 14 days of the Home Emergency cover starting
  • Heating, plumbing and drainage claims excluded once a home has been unoccupied for more than 60 days in a row
  • Excludes boilers with an output over 70kW, underfloor heating, solar heating systems and warm-air systems
  • Trustpilot scores reflect the whole Churchill brand (mostly motor/home insurance), not the home-emergency/boiler element specifically
  • Recurring customer gripes about renewal price increases and slow claims communication (see below)

Who is it for?

Best for people who already have (or want) Churchill home insurance and would like boiler, heating and wider home-emergency protection added onto a single, FCA-regulated policy.

A sensible fit if you value insurer-backed protection (FSCS and Ombudsman) and a 24/7 emergency line over the hands-on, scheduled servicing of a traditional boiler maintenance plan.

Less suitable if you specifically want an annual boiler service included or a standalone boiler-cover contract - Churchill offers neither; a dedicated boiler-cover/maintenance plan would suit that need better.

Does Churchill sell standalone boiler cover?

No. Churchill does not offer a separate boiler-cover plan. Boiler and central heating breakdowns are covered through its Home Emergency cover, which is an optional add-on to a Churchill home insurance policy (and is included as standard on its Home Plus tier).

Is Churchill's cover regulated insurance or a service plan?

It is FCA-regulated insurance, underwritten by U K Insurance Limited (FRN 202810), which is now part of Aviva following its acquisition of Direct Line Group in 2025. That means it carries FSCS protection and access to the Financial Ombudsman Service - unlike unregulated boiler service/maintenance plans, which carry neither.

What does the boiler/heating element cover and how much?

It covers emergency breakdown of your home's primary heating system, with up to £500 per call-out toward repairs, call-out charges, labour and parts. It also covers plumbing, drainage, electrics, pests and lockouts, plus up to £250 for one night's emergency accommodation (including your pet) if your home becomes uninhabitable.

Does it include an annual boiler service?

No. This is breakdown/emergency insurance, not a maintenance plan, so routine servicing and wear-and-tear maintenance are not included. Any gas work should always be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What does it cost?

Churchill does not publish a flat price; the add-on premium depends on your property and the underlying home insurance policy and is shown at quote. Prices here are indicative and were last checked June 2026 - confirm current pricing and terms on Churchill's own website.

It pays to see how boiler cover plans compare — prices and cover levels vary more than most people expect.
