Saga Boiler Cover Review

Saga is the over-50s specialist insurer. It doesn't sell a standalone boiler-cover policy — instead, boiler and central-heating breakdown is bundled into its "Home and Heating Emergency" cover, which is added on to a Saga Home Insurance policy. It's genuine FCA-regulated insurance, not a service plan.

Overview

Saga focuses on customers aged 50 and over, but you only need ONE person on the policy to be 50+ — so it's accessible to most households. It does not offer boiler cover as a standalone product. Heating breakdown is covered through an add-on called "Home and Heating Emergency", which sits on top of a Saga Home Insurance buildings/contents policy. There's also a cheaper "Home Emergency" tier that covers gas/electric supply, water pipes, plumbing and drains but NOT the boiler itself.

The heating tier covers sudden, complete breakdown of the boiler, heating controls and main heating system on the three main UK boiler types (conventional, condensing and combi) up to 70kW output. Notably there's no maximum boiler age. An optional annual boiler service can be added. Because it's bundled with home insurance rather than sold alone, Saga suits people who want one insurer for buildings, contents and emergencies rather than a dedicated boiler-only plan.

What customers say

Customer sentiment is mixed: a large Trustpilot base rates Saga around 4/5 and consistently praises its frontline staff, but renewal price hikes, admin/auto-renewal gripes and weaker independent (Which?) claims-handling scores are persistent concerns — particularly notable for an over-50s audience.

What customers like

  • Helpful, courteous UK-based phone staff is the most consistently praised theme
  • Some customers report smooth, fairly handled claims that were paid promptly
  • Reassurance of a 24/7 emergency helpline and the over-50s specialist positioning
  • Bundling home insurance and emergency cover with one long-established brand
  • No maximum boiler age, which appeals to owners of older heating systems

Common complaints

  • Steep price increases at renewal — a recurring complaint, with some feeling cover is cheaper elsewhere
  • Claims delays and long phone wait times reported by some customers
  • Auto-renewal and cancellation-fee frustrations are a recurring admin gripe
  • Which? survey scores for overall customer satisfaction and claims handling are notably weak versus rivals
  • Exclusions catch some out — partial failures, radiator repairs, descaling/desludging and underfloor-heating repairs are not covered

Pros & watch-outs

Pros

  • Genuine FCA-regulated insurance with FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection
  • No maximum boiler age — useful for older boilers
  • Generous per-incident limit (up to £2,000) and unlimited call-outs
  • 24/7 emergency helpline plus overnight accommodation cover if the home is left uninhabitable
  • Up to £250 toward a replacement if the boiler can't be economically repaired
  • Optional annual service add-on; backed by a large, established over-50s brand

Watch-outs

  • Not available standalone — you must hold Saga Home Insurance to add it, so factor in the full premium
  • Frequent reports of sharp renewal price rises; shop around each year
  • Below-par Which? scores for overall satisfaction and claims handling
  • Several exclusions: partial failures, radiator repairs, descaling/desludging and underfloor-heating repairs
  • Boiler must be under 70kW and installed to British standards

Who is it for?

Best for over-50s households that want one trusted insurer covering buildings, contents AND heating emergencies under a single home-insurance policy, rather than a cheap dedicated boiler-only plan.

Good for owners of older boilers, since there's no maximum age limit and it's regulated insurance with full FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection.

Less suitable if you only want boiler-and-heating cover on its own, want the keenest price, or are sensitive to renewal increases — a standalone boiler-cover specialist or annual switching may work out cheaper.

Does Saga still offer boiler and heating cover in 2026?

Yes. Saga doesn't sell standalone boiler cover, but boiler and central-heating breakdown is covered through its "Home and Heating Emergency" add-on on a Saga Home Insurance policy, advertised from £69.99/year. Confirm current details on saga.co.uk.

Is Saga boiler cover regulated insurance or a service plan?

It's FCA-regulated insurance, so it carries FSCS protection and access to the Financial Ombudsman Service — not an unregulated maintenance plan. The Home Emergency element is provided by AXA Assistance (UK) Limited and underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance S.A.

Who underwrites Saga's cover?

Home Emergency cover is provided by AXA Assistance (UK) Limited and underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance S.A. The underlying Saga Home Insurance is now provided in partnership with Ageas (Saga sold its in-house underwriter, Acromas, to Ageas, completed July 2025). Check your own policy documents for the exact underwriter.

Is there a maximum boiler age?

No. Saga states there's no maximum boiler age on Home and Heating Emergency cover, provided the boiler is under 70kW and installed to British standards.

What isn't covered?

Common exclusions include partial or intermittent failures, the failure of one or more radiators, descaling/desludging, and repairs to underfloor heating. Any gas work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Read the policy wording carefully.
