John Lewis Boiler Cover Review
John Lewis does not sell a standalone boiler-cover or maintenance plan. Instead, boiler and heating breakdowns are covered through an optional Home Emergency add-on bolted onto a John Lewis home insurance policy. Following a major shake-up in 2026, John Lewis Money became an FCA-authorised insurance broker, placing cover with a panel of insurers, with the Home Emergency add-on underwritten by ARAG.
Overview
John Lewis offers boiler and heating protection only as an optional Home Emergency add-on to its home insurance — there is no separate "boiler cover" product or pay-monthly maintenance plan. The add-on provides up to £1,500 (inclusive of VAT, labour and materials) towards emergency repairs, with a version that also includes an annual boiler service. Your boiler is covered as your primary heating system if it fails completely and you lose heating or hot water; gas, oil and LPG boilers are eligible, and the add-on can be bought alongside Bronze, Silver or Gold home insurance.
In early 2026 John Lewis Money restructured its insurance business, becoming an FCA-authorised insurance broker (authorised March 2026) and moving from a single underwriter (previously RSA) to a panel of home insurers — AXA, Prestige Underwriting, Covéa and Ageas — for policies launched from April 2026. The Home Emergency and Home Legal Expenses add-ons are underwritten by ARAG Legal Expenses Insurance Company Limited. Because it is regulated insurance rather than a service plan, it carries FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection.

What customers say
Overall sentiment is mixed-to-positive: customers value the John Lewis brand, competitive new-customer pricing and occasional standout claims service, but recurring gripes centre on steep renewal hikes and third-party (Sedgwick) claims handling. The headline Trustpilot score is high but spans all Money products, not home insurance specifically.
What customers like
- Strong trust in the John Lewis brand and its reputation for service
- Competitive quotes for new customers, and recognition from Which?/Defaqto for the home insurance product
- Reports of some claims handled promptly and responsively, including larger damage claims
- 24/7 home emergency helpline and access to vetted tradespeople via the underwriter
Common complaints
- Sharp renewal price increases for existing customers with no claims (reports of premiums rising by a third or more, in some cases doubling)
- Frustration with claims handling — claims are administered by a third party (Sedgwick), with reports of delays, back-and-forth and promised callbacks that didn't happen
- Some claims declined after lengthy assessment, leaving customers feeling let down
- Inconsistent customer-service experiences, and confusion caused by the 2026 underwriter/broker changes
Plans & prices
| Plan | What it covers | From |
|---|---|---|
| Home Emergency (add-on) | Up to £1,500 (inc. VAT) per emergency for temporary/urgent repairs to your primary heating system incl. boiler, plumbing, drainage, electrics and home security; 24/7 helpline via ARAG. | Home Emergency with Boiler Servicing (add-on) | As above, plus an annual service for your gas, oil or LPG boiler. | Optional add-on — quote-dependent; confirm on the John Lewis site |
John Lewis does not publish flat monthly boiler-cover prices because Home Emergency is an add-on priced as part of your overall home insurance quote — it varies by property, sums insured and chosen insurer. Get a personalised quote and confirm pricing on the provider's own site. Indicative only, last checked June 2026.
Pros & watch-outs
Pros
- FCA-regulated insurance, so FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection apply (unlike unregulated maintenance plans)
- Up to £1,500 per emergency, covering boiler/heating plus plumbing, drainage, electrics and security in one add-on
- Covers gas, oil and LPG primary heating systems
- Optional version includes an annual boiler service
- Backed by a trusted brand and established insurers (ARAG underwrites the add-on)
Watch-outs
- No standalone boiler cover — you must hold a John Lewis home insurance policy to add Home Emergency
- Boilers over 15 years old, with output of 60kW+, or beyond economical repair are excluded
- Cover can be refused if the primary heating system has not been serviced by a qualified person within the last 15 months — keep your service records
- Cover is for emergency/temporary repairs up to £1,500 — it is not a full boiler-replacement guarantee
- Renewal premiums can rise significantly; review each year and compare
- Claims are administered by a third party (Sedgwick), and the 2026 broker/panel changes mean you should check exactly who underwrites your policy
Who is it for?
Best suited to people who already want — or already hold — John Lewis home insurance and would like boiler/heating breakdown protection bundled in rather than as a separate monthly plan.
A reasonable fit if you value FCA-regulated cover with FSCS/Ombudsman protection and a single point of contact for multiple home emergencies (heating, plumbing, electrics, security).
Less suitable if you have an older boiler (over 15 years), want guaranteed boiler replacement, or are looking for a cheap standalone pay-monthly boiler plan — a dedicated boiler-cover provider may suit better. Compare options and confirm details on the provider's own site.

Does John Lewis sell standalone boiler cover?
No. There is no separate John Lewis boiler-cover product or pay-monthly maintenance plan. Boiler and heating protection is available only as an optional Home Emergency add-on to a John Lewis home insurance policy.
Is John Lewis boiler/home emergency cover FCA-regulated?
Yes. It is regulated insurance, not an unregulated service plan. John Lewis Money is an FCA-authorised insurance broker and the Home Emergency add-on is underwritten by ARAG Legal Expenses Insurance Company Limited, so FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection apply. Confirm the current details on your policy documents.
How much cover do you get?
Up to £1,500 inclusive of VAT (labour and materials) per home emergency for urgent repairs, including your primary heating system. A version with annual boiler servicing is also available.
Which boilers and fuel types are covered?
Your boiler is covered if it is your primary heating system and fails completely, causing loss of heating or hot water. Gas, oil and LPG boilers are eligible, but boilers over 15 years old, those with output of 60kW or more, or those beyond economical repair are excluded, and the system must have been serviced within the last 15 months. Any gas work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Who underwrites John Lewis home insurance now?
Since 2026 John Lewis uses a panel of home insurers — AXA, Prestige Underwriting, Covéa and Ageas — rather than a single underwriter (previously RSA). The Home Emergency and Home Legal Expenses add-ons are underwritten by ARAG. Check your own documents to see which insurer holds your policy.
