Tesco Bank Boiler Cover Review
Tesco doesn't sell a standalone boiler-cover product. Instead, you cover your boiler by adding optional Home Emergency Cover to a Tesco Bank Home Insurance policy (boiler breakdown is also built into the top-tier Finest policy). It's genuine FCA-regulated insurance, not a maintenance plan.
Overview
Tesco's boiler and heating protection isn't a standalone product like British Gas HomeCare or a 24|7 Home Rescue plan. It comes as Home Emergency Cover, an optional add-on to a Tesco Bank Home Insurance policy (the brand now trades as "Tesco Insurance"). Boiler/heating breakdown is one of several emergencies covered. The most expensive Finest home insurance tier includes boiler breakdown cover as standard; on lower tiers you pay extra to bolt it on.
Because it's part of a home insurance policy, this is FCA-regulated insurance rather than a service/maintenance plan. The main home insurance is underwritten by Tesco Underwriting Ltd; the Home Emergency Cover element is underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance S.A. It is aimed at gas/mains and conventional domestic heating systems. Annual servicing is NOT included (unlike dedicated boiler plans) — it's emergency breakdown cover, so you'd still arrange your own Gas Safe service.
Independent reviews
What customers say
Sentiment is broadly positive on price and front-line phone service, backed by strong Which? and Defaqto ratings, but a recurring minority of reviewers report painful renewal price jumps and slow, sometimes obstructive claims handling on home-emergency events.
What customers like
- Quick access to a real person on the phone, with some issues resolved fairly quickly
- Competitive/well-priced cover at the point of first purchase, often helped by Clubcard discounts
- Strong independent quality ratings (Which? Recommended Provider, 5-star Defaqto on buildings and contents)
- Unlimited call-outs and no excess on Home Emergency claims is seen as good value when claims go smoothly
- Trusted, familiar high-street brand name reassures buyers
Common complaints
- Steep automatic renewal price rises — customers report increases well above inflation and finding much cheaper quotes elsewhere on comparison sites
- Slow claims handling and poor communication — promised call-backs not made and multi-week delays on some claims
- Home emergency claims declined on technicalities — e.g. complaints about being turned down for arranging their own tradesperson first
- Onus put on the customer to diagnose or locate the problem (e.g. arranging leak detection) before the claim proceeds
- Frustration that the boiler element is bundled into home insurance rather than being a simple standalone plan with servicing

Tesco does not publish a flat monthly boiler-cover price — the cost is bundled into your home insurance quote and depends on your property, sums insured and chosen cover level. Clubcard holders may get a guaranteed Clubcard discount. There is no separate excess on Home Emergency call-outs, but cover is capped at £1,000 per call-out. Pros & watch-outs
Pros
- Genuine FCA-regulated insurance with FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection (unlike unregulated maintenance plans)
- Up to £1,000 per call-out with unlimited call-outs and no excess on Home Emergency claims
- Covers more than just the boiler — plumbing, drainage and electrics, plus security and roof under Full cover
- Strong independent recognition: Which? Recommended Provider and 5-star Defaqto home insurance
- Clubcard discount can reduce cost for Tesco shoppers; cover can be added to a home insurance policy
Watch-outs
- Not a dedicated boiler plan — you must hold (and keep) a Tesco home insurance policy to have the cover
- No annual boiler service included — this is emergency breakdown cover, not a maintenance plan, so you arrange your own Gas Safe service
- £1,000-per-call-out cap; if the boiler is beyond economic repair Tesco pays only a contribution towards replacement, not a full new boiler
- Reported renewal price increases — review the price each year rather than auto-renewing
- Some home-emergency claims declined on policy technicalities; read the conditions (e.g. who you're allowed to call) carefully
Who is it for?
A good fit for people who already want — or already hold — Tesco home insurance and would prefer one bundled policy covering the boiler plus other household emergencies, rather than a separate boiler-care contract.
Tesco Clubcard members stand to benefit most thanks to the Clubcard discount, as do buyers who value FCA-regulated protection (FSCS + Ombudsman) over a cheaper unregulated maintenance plan.
Less suitable if you specifically want an annual boiler service included, a standalone monthly boiler plan, or guaranteed full boiler replacement — a dedicated boiler-cover provider may suit those needs better.

Does Tesco sell standalone boiler cover?
No. Tesco covers your boiler through optional Home Emergency Cover added to a Tesco Bank Home Insurance policy, or as standard on the top-tier Finest home insurance. There is no separate, standalone boiler-only plan.
Is Tesco boiler cover regulated insurance or a service plan?
It's FCA-regulated insurance, so it carries FSCS protection and access to the Financial Ombudsman Service. The Home Emergency element is underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance S.A. and the home insurance by Tesco Underwriting Ltd.
What does the boiler/heating cover include?
Heating breakdown is one of the emergencies covered. Claims are capped at up to £1,000 per call-out with unlimited call-outs and no excess. It covers emergency repairs (and a contribution towards replacement if the boiler is beyond economic repair) — it does NOT include an annual boiler service.
How much does it cost?
There's no fixed monthly price. The cost is built into your home insurance quote and varies by property and cover level; a Clubcard discount may apply. Confirm current pricing on Tesco's own site (prices last checked June 2026).
What do reviews say about Tesco?
Tesco Insurance scores around 4.4/5 on Trustpilot (approximately 24,000 reviews, June 2026) and is a Which? Recommended Provider. Common praise is price and phone service; common complaints are renewal price rises and slow claims handling.
