AXA Boiler Cover Review

AXA is one of the world's largest insurers and a major UK home-insurance provider. It does not sell a standalone boiler-cover or annual service plan in the British Gas / HomeServe style. Instead, boiler breakdown is covered through "Home Assistance" (home-emergency cover) that you add to, or that comes bundled with, an AXA home insurance policy. It is FCA-regulated insurance, not an unregulated maintenance plan.

Overview

AXA UK is part of the global AXA Group and a long-established home and motor insurer. For boiler and heating problems, AXA does not offer a dedicated, monthly boiler-cover or service contract. Cover comes via its home-emergency product ("Home Assistance"), which is either an optional add-on to AXA Home Insurance and AXA Plus Home Insurance, or included as standard with AXA Premier Home Insurance.

This is genuine FCA-regulated insurance covering sudden, unexpected emergencies (boiler breakdown, burst pipes, blocked drains, electrical failure, roof damage) rather than routine servicing or wear-and-tear. AXA's home cover is built around gas/oil central-heating homes in the standard UK way; it is not a gas-only service plan, and there is no annual boiler service included. Any gas work is carried out by an approved Gas Safe registered engineer arranged through AXA's 24/7 emergency line.

What customers say

Overall sentiment is reasonably positive for a large insurer - AXA carries a solid 4.4/5 Trustpilot score across tens of thousands of reviews - but, as with most home-emergency cover, the recurring negatives centre on engineer/contractor delays, claim-scope disputes and renewal price rises.

What customers like

  • Strong, trusted global brand and the reassurance of buying from a large regulated insurer
  • Generally smooth online quote and policy-purchase experience
  • 24/7 emergency helpline and the convenience of having approved contractors arranged for you
  • Many policyholders report straightforward, fairly-handled claims and competitive premiums at renewal-shop time
  • Home-emergency cover bundled into a single home insurance policy is convenient for those who don't want a separate boiler contract

Common complaints

  • Delays getting an engineer or contractor to attend emergencies, sometimes waiting several days for a boiler repair
  • Disputes over what counts as a covered "emergency" - some claims initially refused (e.g. a leak classed as part of the heating system rather than a covered burst)
  • Difficulty for AXA's network to source a qualified local tradesperson quickly in some areas
  • Long call-waiting times and repeated callbacks to chase a single emergency claim
  • Renewal price increases and the usual frustration that home-emergency cover excludes servicing and wear-and-tear, only sudden breakdowns

Prices are indicative and last checked June 2026. AXA does not publish a flat monthly boiler-cover price because emergency cover is part of a home insurance policy and is individually quoted. Home insurance was advertised "from £189" a year; the home-emergency per-claim limit is up to £1,000 (up to £1,500 on AXA Premier). Always confirm current premiums, limits and excesses on AXA's own website before buying.

Pros & watch-outs

Pros

  • FCA-regulated insurance with FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection (unlike unregulated service plans)
  • Backed by a major global insurer and underwritten by AXA Insurance UK Plc / Inter Partner Assistance S.A.
  • 24/7, 365-day emergency helpline with contractors arranged for you
  • Covers a broad range of domestic emergencies, not just the boiler (burst pipes, drains, electrics, roof)
  • Convenient if you already want AXA home insurance - one policy, one renewal

Watch-outs

  • Not a true boiler-cover or service plan - there is no annual boiler service, and routine maintenance and wear-and-tear are excluded
  • Only available as an add-on to (or bundled with) AXA home insurance - you cannot buy it standalone
  • Per-claim limit caps payouts (up to £1,000, or £1,500 on Premier) - large repairs/replacements may exceed this
  • Reported delays sourcing engineers and occasional disputes over whether an issue qualifies as a covered emergency
  • Excess and exact terms vary by policy - read the policy wording and confirm limits before buying

Who is it for?

AXA home-emergency cover suits people who want their boiler-breakdown protection wrapped into a single, FCA-regulated home insurance policy from a big-name insurer, rather than a separate monthly boiler-cover contract.

It is a good fit if you value emergency call-out for a range of household problems (heating, plumbing, electrics, roof) and the protection of FSCS and the Financial Ombudsman.

It is less suitable if you specifically want an annual boiler service, a low fixed monthly price, or standalone boiler cover without taking AXA home insurance - in those cases a dedicated boiler-cover plan may suit better.

Does AXA sell standalone boiler cover?

No. AXA does not offer a separate, standalone boiler-cover or annual service plan. Boiler breakdown is covered through its Home Assistance (home-emergency) product, which is added to or bundled with an AXA home insurance policy.

Is AXA home-emergency cover regulated insurance?

Yes. It is FCA-regulated general insurance. AXA home insurance is underwritten by AXA Insurance UK Plc and the home-emergency element by Inter Partner Assistance S.A. (AXA Group). Eligible customers have FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection.

What boiler problems does it cover?

It covers sudden boiler breakdown as an emergency, paying call-out, labour and parts up to the per-claim limit (up to £1,000, or up to £1,500 on AXA Premier). It does not cover routine servicing, maintenance or wear-and-tear.

Does it include an annual boiler service?

No. Unlike dedicated boiler-cover plans, AXA's home-emergency cover deals with unexpected emergencies, not scheduled servicing. You'd arrange a separate annual service with a Gas Safe registered engineer.

How much does it cost?

There is no flat monthly price; cover is priced as part of your home insurance quote. AXA home insurance was advertised from around £189 a year. Always confirm the current premium, excess and limits on AXA's own website (figures last checked June 2026).
