EDF Boiler Cover Review

EDF, one of the UK's "Big Six" energy suppliers, sells a range of boiler and heating breakdown cover called BoilerCare, plus home-emergency add-ons. It is open to non-EDF customers. Importantly, the range is mixed: the Value and Total tiers are FCA-regulated insurance underwritten by Domestic & General Insurance PLC, while the Gold, Platinum and Repair & Care tiers are maintenance/support plans provided by Domestic & General Services Limited (not insurance).

Overview

EDF Energy is a large UK energy supplier (part of the French EDF group) that also sells boiler and central-heating breakdown cover under the BoilerCare brand, alongside home-emergency cover. As of 2026 it still actively sells these products to UK households, and you do not have to be an EDF energy customer to buy them. To be eligible, your boiler generally needs to be owned by you, in good working order, out of guarantee and under 15 years old.

Crucially, the BoilerCare range is not all the same type of product. BoilerCare Value and BoilerCare Total are FCA-regulated insurance policies underwritten by Domestic & General Insurance PLC, so they carry FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection. BoilerCare Gold, BoilerCare Platinum and Repair & Care are instead maintenance/support plans provided by Domestic & General Services Limited - these are service plans rather than insurance and do not carry the same FSCS/Ombudsman protection. Repairs are carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers, and most plans include an annual service (the cheapest Value tier does not).

Always confirm the current price, excess, exclusions and exactly what's included on EDF's own website before buying. Independent ratings

Trustpilot (EDF whole-energy-business page, not BoilerCare) Excellent (approx. 4.6-4.8 / 5)220,000+ reviewsas of June 2026

No widely-published independent rating exists for EDF's boiler cover specifically. EDF's Trustpilot presence (rated 'Excellent', roughly 4.6-4.8/5 across 220,000+ reviews, June 2026; the exact score varies by source/date) covers the whole energy business, not BoilerCare in isolation, so treat it with caution and check the current Trustpilot/Google figures yourself before relying on them. What customers say

Overall sentiment is mixed-to-positive: customers value the brand reassurance, Gas Safe engineers and the choice of tiers, but recurring complaints centre on claim/repair delays, the capped boiler replacement, and confusion over which products are insurance versus service plans.

What customers like

  • Engineers and call-handlers who go the extra mile to resolve boiler faults
  • Plans described as reasonably clear about what is and isn't covered
  • Reassurance of buying from a large, well-known energy brand
  • Annual service included on most tiers, with Gas Safe engineers nationwide
  • Competitive entry pricing versus some larger rivals such as British Gas

Common complaints

  • Waits and delays on some home-emergency and breakdown claims
  • Replacement boiler not fully covered, leaving large out-of-pocket costs when a boiler fails
  • Frustration that the cheapest Value tier excludes the annual service
  • Bespoke or older parts not always replaced like-for-like
  • Confusion over which tiers are insurance versus service/maintenance plans, and over excess/call-out charges

Plans & prices

PlanWhat it coversFrom
BoilerCare Value (insurance)Entry-level boiler-breakdown INSURANCE (underwritten by Domestic & General Insurance PLC): repairs to the boiler, controls and central heating by a Gas Safe engineer. Does not include an annual service. Includes a replacement boiler contribution of up to £750 (installation not included) where applicable. From around £7 per month (about £84 for the first year with a £95 excess); higher if you choose a lower excess. Last checked June 2026.
BoilerCare Total (insurance)Boiler, controls and central-heating breakdown INSURANCE (Domestic & General Insurance PLC) plus an annual service AND home-emergency cover (drainage, plumbing, roof tiles, security, pests). Includes up to £750 towards a replacement boiler (installation excluded). From around £20.40 per month (often with an intro offer such as the first two months free). Last checked June 2026.
BoilerCare Gold / Platinum (service plans)Maintenance/support PLANS provided by Domestic & General Services Limited (NOT insurance, so no FSCS/Ombudsman in the same way). Add annual servicing and broader heating cover; both typically carry a £95 call-out charge and the £750 replacement-boiler contribution.Gold from around £11.60 per month; Platinum from around £15.80 per month. Indicative - confirm current tiers and prices on EDF's site. Last checked June 2026.

Prices are indicative and last checked June 2026. EDF runs periodic intro discounts (e.g. money off or free months at the start) and prices vary by the excess/call-out you choose. The cheaper headline prices generally assume a £95 excess/call-out; removing the excess costs more. Always confirm the current monthly cost, excess, product type and any waiting period on EDF's own site before buying.

Pros & watch-outs

Pros

  • Value and Total tiers are FCA-regulated insurance underwritten by Domestic & General Insurance PLC, so they carry FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection
  • Backed by a large, established energy company with nationwide Gas Safe engineer coverage
  • Available to non-EDF customers, not just EDF energy account holders
  • Choice of products and excess/call-out levels lets you trade monthly cost against up-front charge
  • Higher tiers bundle boiler, central heating and (on Total) home-emergency cover plus an annual service
  • All tiers include a contribution of up to £750 towards a replacement boiler where one is needed

Watch-outs

  • The range is MIXED: Gold, Platinum and Repair & Care are maintenance/support plans (Domestic & General Services Limited), NOT regulated insurance, so they do not carry the same FSCS/Ombudsman protection as Value and Total
  • Eligibility generally requires a boiler under 15 years old, owned by you, out of guarantee and in good working order
  • Replacement boiler is only part-funded - the contribution is capped at £750 and excludes installation, so a failed boiler can still cost a lot
  • The cheapest Value tier does not include an annual service
  • Most tiers carry a £95 excess/call-out charge unless you pay more to reduce or remove it
  • Home-emergency and some heating cover is handled via a third-party administrator/provider, so service experience can differ from EDF's energy side
  • Bespoke or obsolete parts may not be replaced like-for-like

Who is it for?

A reasonable fit for owners of a boiler under 15 years old who want breakdown cover from a large, recognised brand. If FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection matter to you, stick to the Value or Total tiers, which are regulated insurance.

The Total tier suits people who also want broader home-emergency cover (plumbing, drains, security) and an annual service bundled in, while Value suits budget-focused households wanting boiler breakdown protection only.

Less suitable if you mainly worry about a full boiler replacement (it is only part-funded to £750 excluding installation), or if you specifically want regulated insurance but are drawn to the Gold/Platinum/Repair & Care tiers, which are service plans rather than insurance.

Does EDF still sell boiler cover in 2026?

Yes. EDF actively sells BoilerCare boiler and heating breakdown cover, plus home-emergency cover, and you don't need to be an EDF energy customer to buy it.

Is EDF boiler cover regulated insurance or a service plan?

It depends on the tier. BoilerCare Value and Total are FCA-regulated insurance underwritten by Domestic & General Insurance PLC, so they carry FSCS and Financial Ombudsman protection. BoilerCare Gold, Platinum and Repair & Care are maintenance/support plans provided by Domestic & General Services Limited - these are service plans, not insurance, and do not carry the same protection.

What does EDF boiler cover cost?

Indicatively from around £7 a month for the basic Value tier (about £84 for the first year at a £95 excess), with Gold from about £11.60, Platinum from about £15.80, and Total from about £20.40 a month. Prices depend on the excess/call-out you choose. Confirm current prices on EDF's own site, as intro offers and excess options change pricing. Last checked June 2026.

Does it cover oil or LPG boilers?

Cover is generally aimed at standard domestic boilers under 15 years old that are owned by you, in good working order and out of guarantee. Check eligibility for your specific boiler type on EDF's site before buying.

Will EDF replace my boiler if it can't be fixed?

Only partly. All four BoilerCare tiers include a contribution of up to £750 towards a replacement boiler, but installation is not included, so a failed boiler can still leave a significant bill. Cover is mainly for repairs and maintenance, not a full new boiler.
